Deciding to build my own Pc - to my own spec. Done a fair bit of digging just need some pointers or advice from experts - compatibility is the key

Want to go for a Pentium4 2.4c or 2.6c (800fsb) - because i can overclock up to around 3.0-3.4ghz, which chip is preferable as the prices are negligible?

Does the stepping of these chips matter that much - slz63 chips attract a premium price from overclockers and are out of stock, but from my digging the sl6wf and sl6wr with the D1 stepping perform just as well. is that true?? And are overclockers the only place that allow you to hand pick your chip?

The 2.4 chip - £102, 2.6 - £113 if you shop about, not much more than the Barton's 2500 really

Motherboard Asus P4c800 heard is good. And will support further Pentiums, unlike Athlon route where 64 bit is the path, heard abit max3 board is not very stable and expensive.

So is this board a good overclocker?

Thinking of putting it with ocz4000 mem 2x256mb matched pair £116 (Not the Gold) Maybe this can go 1:1 with the mobo, I read somewhere any faster RAM will not run as aggressively. Also heard the twinmos, kingston is not as good??

Also any help on a good heatsink or fan, to keep the thing cool. I know stock fan and sink are okay but prices are minimal.

Will i need to cool the northbridge?

And any ideas on a good PSU??

Any help appreciated - just got to talk the wife round now

Assume you have had a look round here and at their forum?

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/

    P4 2.4C will usually hit 3.4

My 3.0GHz runs at 3.6GHz but I am cautious so have ramped it down to 3.45GHz at the moment.

    I currently run:-

    Asus P4C800-E Deluxe
    2 x Kingston HyperX 512MB DDR PC3200 CAS 2 Dual Channel Kit
    Intel Pentium P4 3.0GHz @ 3.45GHz (800FSB) with HT Retail
    Zalman CNPS7000AlCu Ultra-Quiet
    Antec TrueBlue 480 Watt PSU
Hercules 3D Prophet 9800SE AIW Softmodded Omega latest
    2 x WD Raptors 36GB SATA RAID 0 10,000rpm
    Netgear 54G WiFi
    Liteon DVD/CDRW
    Liteon DVD+-RW
    17" EIZO L565

    230 FSB
    320 Dram Freq
    66/33 AGP/PCI
    1.575 CPU VCore
    275 DDR Ref
    1.60V AGP VDDQ
    Performance : Standard

Configure DRAM timing by SPD : Disabled
    CAS Latency : 2.0
    RAS Precharge : 2
RAS to CAS Delay : 2
    Precharge Delay : 5
    Burst Length : 8
    Performance Acceleration Mode : Enabled
    DRAM Idle Timer : Auto
    DRAM Refresh Rate : Auto

    230FSB
    3DMark 2001 with 320 DRAM Freq = 18231
    3DMark 2003 with 320 DRAM Freq = 5893

    This is all AFAIK/IMO

Asus is good board and reasonable overclocker, the Abit IC7 is a better overclocker but I have had issues with Abit in the past so went for Asus. Asus will support early Prescott which is due out next month as I'm sure you will be aware of.

Northbridge should be ok with the stock heatsink.

Antec or Enermax are my preferred, stay away from Q-Tec.

Have two 1GB Twinmoss Dual Channel PC3200 kits, not a patch on the Kingston HyperX. No experience of OCZ. Corsair are well liked.

    Cheers for the Info

Still checking out the overclock sites as you posted

Cannot believe how much these P4's have dropped in price.

I know the prescott is coming but the 2.4 is a quality chip
