I have the NEtgear WGT624 - works really well - never lost connection and easy to setup

To save a few quid bought a factory conditioned one from amazon, mates have bought factory conditioned from ebay as well - get a router for about £25 instead of £60+

Yep - have had Netgear in the past and they work well.

Using a Linksys WAG54 GX2 now though (ADSL2 compatible for when it arrives) and have to say this is excellent - wireless range is much greater than my previous router and it was an absolute doddle to set up!

Bit more expensive though, but worth every penny in my mind!

Don't think you can go far wrong with either company though - there will be people on her that have had probs with both and people that have had excellent experience of both!:D

The Speedtouch 580 is meant to be quite good too!

Another vote ggor netgear here, DG834GT but there are probably newer models now.

The RP614V2 is also a great solution....

Also take note... if you get connection issues it will be cause you need to enable the correct ports on your router

In port forwarding forward

Port 88 on UDP to the Xbox 360 ip
Port 3074 on UDP+TCP to the Xbox 360 ip

This will stop all the unable to connect to all players (like in pgr3)

Yep, althought UPnP is the preferred option now. If your router supports it (always get the latest firmware as its pretty new) turn it on and you dont need to portforward at all.

I wouldnt touch Netgear stuff personally, had far too many problems with them at work and home. D-Link and Linksys are by far the best kit on the market atm.

I use a Lantech HR-114 II (http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductsList.asp?Name=NET-LAN-8800236 )
It took me all of 5 minutes to set this up,and its real cheap too, only just over £20. A good router for a novice who just wants stuff to work without all the bells and whistles :D

its only a broadband router, with no adsl modem in it, so its only real use is to those on cable broadband.
And so no use to the orignal poster

I have the D-Link DGL-4300 Gaming Router, best router I have had so far.

Check it out:

Hmm I new to all this and would like to connect my Xbox 360 in a similar fashion.

Regarding the difference between routers and modems and in particular the DGL-4300, is that a modem as well as a router? I mean I wouldn't have to buy a modem in addition to the router?

No it isn't but if your existing modem has a ethernet output (not USB) you can connect this to the WAN port of the new router!

My current modem has a USB output to my PC. Although surely that would still be ok cos the ethernet wire that goes from the modem to the microfilter would just go straight into the router instead?

However, at the moment my PC is upstairs, and my Xbox 360 is downstairs so I guess the best bet would be to buy a modem and a router, have them both downstairs and have the Xbox 360 plug directly into it. I could then get a wireless USB thingy for my PC. Or maybe the other way around....

You need an ethernet connection mate

So from your ADSL you need the ethernet to go into the WAN port of the modem, not the phone connection that goes into the microfilter

Wow this actually seems quite complicated!

Im no PC novice but this does my head in a little. More importantly the cost factors of getting the 360 online seems high when you consider a new modem + router.

I was hoping for a modem/router that my 360 can feed off directly and my PC upstairs can feed off via a wireless connection (after all, Im sure that the constant connection for the 360 is more important than for the PC).

If did go for that modem Kinhell, I take it that I would have that downstairs near my 360 and plugged into to the phone line. Then out of that comes the router (the DGL 4300) which my 360 would be wired to. Finally upstairs my PC via a wireless USB stick is picking up the signal from the router. Is that correct? (bear with me here! :) )

The 4300 is pretty pricey. I mean.. do you really need 4 GIG ports in your router?

You could get a Netgear DG834G or GT with a bundled Wireless USB Adaptor for your PC for a lot less.

Yes mate thats about right :)

However, as the chap above pointed out the 4300 is pricey, I got it because there 4 people here all using the net and with that router I can prioritize xbox live traffic over their porn downloads :D

If I was you I would ditch the USB Modem you have, and get this:

http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/product.asp?pr=ST580

Then you have the router and the modem in 1, I used to have a SpeedTouch when I had ADSL and it was very good, its also recommended by ADSLGuide.org.

So you have this Router/Modem plugged into your phone socket (microfilter) then your xbox plugged into it via RJ45 cable and then your PC is connected wireless through it. Job done

Ahhh That's great! The main thing I was worried about with wireless is a steady connection, range (though my PC is almost directly above Xbox) and finally Xbox 360 compatibility. If this modem satisfies all that then Im a happy chap!

I'd go for the netgear everyone has been mentioning. As well as being a wireless router it has a built in ADSL modem. I bought mine for 85 quid from P.C. World with bundled usb p.c. adaptor. I use an ethernet cable from the 360 to the router.

Never had any trouble with it. Did try the linksys tesco jobbie at first and couldn't get it to work at all, though I am now using one of their laptop cards and that seems fine.
