So i have been having a few issues with my PC just shutting off randomly and not powering on.
Sometimes the PC will power back on straight away and other times i need to leave it or unplug everything and replug everything back in. I have tried to reproduce the issue with stress tests and benchmarks but i havent been able to.
I also havent noticed any artifacts or poor performance when gaming in general (although i have always suspected my GPU hasnt performed that well compared to other peoples benchmarks etc...).
Now this power off problem hasn't happened for a while however playing GTA V on Sunday and it happened again and i couldnt get the PC to switch on at all even after leaving it overnight.
So i started to unplug everything, as usual tested the PSU with a paper clip and it is working just fine. I removed one memory stick and tested only the motherboard, ram and CPU and the PC powers up OK.
I added the memory stick back in and the PC still boots, I then added the GPU and the PC instantly shuts off and wont switch back on. The only way to get the power back is to remove the GPU then use a paper clip on the 24 pin ATX cable to "test" the psu. This seems to reset the PSU and allows power to the motherboard again. I assume my PSU has an anti surge protection which stops the system turning on if something isnt right with the components?
I tried the GPU in the secondary PCI-E slot and the same thing happened, i changed the PCI-E power cables with a new one and the same thing happened.
I had an old Nvidia GT 640 GPU which i plugged in and this works which would suggest the PCI-E slot is ok. I have also "borrowed" my 750TI from my work machine to see if this works ok.
I have just purchased a second hand EVGA 970 SSC from eBay which should arrive in the next couple of days as a replacement to the 780.
Is there anything else i can test to check if the GPU is definitely dead?
