Hi I need some help, I am just setting up my first home cinema system and i have mission 702e (front) mission 75c (centre) and mission 700 (rear). I will be using it for both films and music. I like my music crystal clear and not too bassy or trebly. I can get a good 2nd hand deal on either of the following 3 receivers -

    denon avr 1804
    marantz sr5200
    yamaha htr-5540rds

Which do you recommend and why?

    Thankyou. :lease:

this is of little help but i had a similar setup before i changed speakers, and i couldn't find an amp that had the sound i wanted. i always found the 702e lacking something in the overall sound. Stereo was o.k. but not for movies.

Your best bet, though tricky in your situation, is to try and hear some amps with them, or it could be a disappointment.

Ok thanks, I'm thinking I will build a decent budget system first, then upgrade as and when. Any more thoughts people?

I would recommend you save some money and buy a better newer amp or look at the cambridge audio 540r as they are quite musical (ask chedmaster as he owns one)or a s/h martantz 5400/5500 .

I have the Marantz 5200 at the moment.

Whilst a good enough budget amp, you can certainly do better nowadays. Its bass management facilities are rather lacking (only 1 crossover frequency at 100Hz) so it's not quite as nice to set up a sub as other amps.

Music performance is pretty good at its price point, though it wasn't as good as the aging Marantz PM66-se (stereo only) that it replaced. I'm afraid I cannot compare it to the other amps mentioned, or indeed to current budget offerings.

I think I paid around £300 for it from Richer Sounds about 3 years back. Can't be more precise than that. It has done exactly what it said on the tin ever since.

I'll be upgrading mine in a few months. I've enjoyed it, but it's time to move onwards and upwards :)

As an aside, I personally will not bother looking at Denon amps. I know it's hardly a scientific survey, but it seems like the vast majority of people posting here with amps breaking down are Denons. And they aren't usually very old either

Thanks gary! The reviews I have read of the marantz all seemed quite good, I know it is an old amp but I havent got a huge budget, i guess it might be that or the yamaha.

I'd agree the Sony looks a corker and has better specs (apart from 100wrms x 6) than my 3 year old Kenwood 9060 THX 6.1 that cost me £450

At that price i'm tempted to go have a listen. I wasn't even considering buying a new receiver.
