I have 4 hundred to spend. Can anyone recommend me some decent headphones to use through my Arcam A28 when not using my B&W speakers? My wife can get quite annoyed with super loud music 27/7 and has agreed that I can buy some high quality headphones to use when she is marking school books!

Nice to see you ear in the Headphone section vinylman ;)

Have you got any headphones (or earphones) just now? If yes, what do they sound like? If no, what kind of sound do you prefer? To give you an idea of what I mean by that, I've got a pair of Sennheiser HD650s and HD800s and although they're made by the same manufacturer, they sound very different to one another. The HD650s have a meatier sound which I find perfect for compact rock 'n' roll e.g. The Clash while the HD800s are ideal for listening to well recorded music or music with lots of detail. The HD800s have a very neutral sound and as such, don't beef up the bass, so if you're after a meaty sound, you'd need to look elsewhere - if those were your only two choices that is, which they aren't of course.

Here is a link to a headphone bake-off thread @ Head-Fi.org. The reviewer kindly describes the specs and sonic qualities of over 50 headphones and what kind on music they work best with and even what kind of headphone amp brings about the best synergy. The caveat here is that it's one man's opinion, but he does a terrific job and describing things I think his views are largely reliable.

Hi Windhoek! Thank you so much for your excellent response to my thread. I'm actually thrilled because the link you posted has a review of the hifiman HE 400s and, as luck would have it, my kind Hifi dealer (O'Brien Hifi in Raynes park, London) popped a set in the post to me yesterday to borrow! The review is fabulous so I'm looking forward to opening them! At the moment I have a pair of Bose TP 1As which are ok for iPod but quite a let down when plugged straight into my Arcam A28!
    Thanks Windhoek- you the man!

    Nice one vinylman ;)

In case the HE400s don't do it for you, Hifi Headphones in West Sussex have a demo room and lots of cans and amps to demo. Even if you're not that close, it might be worth a trip there because it looks like it might be the only place where you can demo just about every pair of cans going.

    Dude, you're too kind!
I live in a little town called Haslemere in Surrey which borders with Hampshire and West Sussex so the area is often referred to as three counties. Which town is the store located in?
Thanks a million Windhoek, I really appreciate your help.

    Their address is:
    7 Chartwell Business Park
    Chartwell Road
    Lancing
    West Sussex, BN15 8FB

What a stroke of luck it is if you're quite near them. I live in Glasgow which is way too far away for me to visit them for a demo. There are quite a few hifi shops up here, but none that specialise in headphones.

Well, I'm now the proud owner of a pair of HE 400s by Hifiman - a deluxe American brand! Since tearing them out of their box this morning, I've listened to Graceland and Blak and Blu (Gary Clark Jr) on vinyl, Stills alone, So beautiful or so what and After the goldrush on CD and James Taylor/Carole King live at the Troubador on DVD. The sound of the headphones is absolutely awesome! They replicate the original recordings so honestly without adding extra bass or distorting high frequencies etc. I'm driving them through an Arcam A28 integrated amplifier which is sitting on top of three Black Ravioli pads. Well I think I'll listen to some Hendrix next....

HE400 / HE500 is on my long-term demo list, but only after the Dac upgrade. Congrats!

Well I couldn't stretch to the HE500s financially but I can certainly say that the HE400s are really good...

Super setup with the Arcam. What speakers do you drive with the A28?

I have B&W P5's and UE TripleFi 10's and love them and have demo'd CM8's 9's and XT8's & Rotel combi. I couldn't make up my mind last year but in the near future I will have to with maybe Arcam/Naim or Rotel impressing.
The price will also play a roll but we will see.
