    Hello all,

I'm looking getting some new bits for system no.2 which so far comprises of:

    Samsung 52 inch M87 1080p
    Sky HD
    PS3 for BR
    KEF 5000 surround kit

I was looking at getting the new Denon 3808 but have since seen everyone raving about the Onkyo amps - current amp for the speakers is a Denon 2805 but I'm looking at future proofing.

However, given I'll be using Sky HD at 1080i and BR and DVD through the PS3 would I really need a scaler, espcially when the PS3 DVD scaler is vastly improved and I'll be using Sky HD? plus the Denon has streaming facilities and the interface seems much better!

    Thanks in advance.

    Kev.

i decided no. my ps3 is a brilliant dvd scaler, its 1080p of course so the reon in the 875 doesnt even get used when playing blurays. my virgin v+ box is so much better with sd than the old pace boxes that you'd have to see it to believe it. the one single thing that may benifit is my Wii, but it really wouldnt make much of a difference. my sony 40w200 is a reasonably good scaler anway, so that does a decent job with it.

in all, i couldnt justify an extra £200 for a scaler i wouldnt use and an extra hdmi which yes would be handy, but not esential when i have a spare socket anway.

regardless, id still choose either the 805 or 875 over the denons. they are better at whats important - sound quality. and masses of power in reserve.

I was thinking of kev77 really and his sky hd! as most of the channel's are SD theres only 12 that are in HD and the scaler in the sky box is a bit rubbish he may get an improvment from using the reon chip. the question is would the improvment be worth £200. I would be tempted after spending so much on a telly to want to get the best from it.

Durk, Are you happy with your Onkyo 875 and Denon 2930 combination? I'm thinking of going for them myself! I'll be testing the 875 and Yamaha 861 over the weekend.
    Cheers Mark

Yes im very happy with them, movies sound brilliant and music's about as good as you'll get from mid price'd AV gear. you could try the marantz 7001 as ive heard its very good(wasnt available when i bought the denon)

thanks for the replies. However, if I've got the sky HD going into the Onkyo at 1080i then will it make any difference scaling up to 1080p?

Yes becouse youve only got 12 HD channels and 400 odd SD ones! so the onkyo would do a better job of upscaling the SD channels than the sky box. If you set the Sky HD box to auto it will output HD stuff at 1080i and SD at 576p! its the 576p stuff that would benifit from the reon

ahh, gotcha, I didn't realise there was an auto setting.

the question is... can anyone say how good sky SD upscaled to 1080p looks?

Sky SD material looks much better through the amp, its worth getting the 875 for this feature alone.

When you're playing CDs, do you use the Denon's DACs or the Onkyo's?
