    I'm after and ultra compact digital camera with 5x optical zoom, good battery life and is small enough to fit in my pocket - I also want a short shutter lag.

    The Pentax Optio SVi seemed to be great until I saw it had a single shot shutter lag of 1.65 seconds which is tortoise like. One that seems pretty good and the only one I can find with all the features is the Hewlett Packard Photosmart R817.

    Any advice would be much appreciated - thanks

    Steve

    EDIT: Just seen two more which sound good: Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1/LZ2 with a 6x optical zoom and Samsung Digimax L55W with 4.8x optical zoom - any thoughts?

    I was recently considering the Ricoh Caplio R3, which has 7.1x optical zoom. Unfortunately it's a little too new to get any good reviews.

    Perhaps someone else has used it?

    The Pana will undoubtedly offer Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS).
    Worth a stop or two over other models.

    Heres the numbers........

    Zoom from Wide to Tele 37 to 222 mm (6 x) 1.8s
    Half-press Lag (0->S1) Wide angle ~0.55s
    Half-press Lag (0->S1) Telephoto ~0.8s
    Half to Full-press Lag (S1->S2) LCD live view <0.1s
    Full-press Lag (0->S2) LCD live view, wide angle ~0.8s
    Off to Shot Taken LCD live view ~3.7s

    Acceptable for a budget camera.
