My local camera club is looking to get a projector for around £2,500 ... obviously good colours and flesh tones are important so we thought about more of the home cinema market than the corporate/powerpoint market ...

The throw is around 15'-20' to an 8' square screen, projectors we have borrowed in the past have an output of around 1800-2000 lumens which is good for our lighting conditions ... XGA quality and two inputs would be useful although not a deal breaker ...

They would like to move to digital AV in the future and also use it for social events (the odd dvd/charity gaming session) so something that copes well with moving images and subtle transitions would be preferred ...

Any obvious choices to go for and at that price range is a bottom end DLP going to be better than a 'top-end' CRT for the same price ??

    Cheers

For colour accuracy and resolution CRT and D-ila projectors are much better than the current DLP and LCD projectors. For the amount you are looking to spend a good used CRT is probably best. The only real problem is the light output, both CRT and home theatre optimised DLP's tend to have low (less than 1000 lumens typically). If you really need to have the lights on then I think a used hi output LCD or D-ila is the only answer. Without spending serious money hi output and colour accuracy do not seem compatible.

Have you guys seen the Mitsubishi XD300? It's well in budget, has Faroudja processing, XGA res, DLP, 2000:1 contrast, 2100 ANSI, 4000 hour lamp life. No digital inputs though, but does have 2 VGA sockets (one of them is component as well I think).

    hope this helps...
