I'm flying to Leeds in a week to collect a car which I will be driving home via the overnight ferry from Liverpool.

I'll probably collect the car around 2pm on Friday 19th and my ferry doesn't leave Liverpool until 10:30pm although I will probably check as early as I can as I want to get an electric car charging spot and there are only 2 onboard.

Allowing 3 hours for the Leeds-Liverpool trip (google maps says around 2hrs 20 but I don't know the area and will also have a 15 minute charge stop), I have about 3-4 hours to kill. Are there any sights to see along the way that would be worth checking? And when I hit the Liverpool area, could anyone recommend a good area to get a bite of food before heading to the ferry?

I'm bringing my 81 year old father along for the road trip. He's like a kid going to Disneyland!

Leeds to Liverpool via M62 via M60 will take a good 3hrs with the excessive roadworks on the M62/M60 corridor.

For a nice scenic route I'd go A660/A65/A59 then drop down into Liverpool, it's a really nice scenic 60mph limit drive with plenty of rest stops.

If you have nice rims, don't go slower than 20mph or you may have bricks.:D:cool:

Lol, no offence to our Scouse contingent, but that's one if my queries. Where is a good place to park up and go for a bite and where isn't?

And that's not because it's Liverpool, it would be the same question with any city.

I know you probably have but just for the record don't forget to factor in at least one charge on the way to Liverpool depending on what car your getting. If it's a leaf then it'll probably struggle to get from Leeds to Liverpool on one charge depending on your driving style, weight of any luggage you may have with you and what gadgets you decided to switch on whilst driving.

@alan280170 - why is my post funny? Serious answer for the leaf as real world range is roughly 80 miles on one charge and as I said that depends on how you drive and what you decide to use whilst driving like radio, ac etc... Extra weight will also have an impact on how much you get out if one charge same as mpg is affected in an ICE car depending on how much weight your carrying and how you drive.

I am 99% sure that the good @DrPhil is not buying a leaf, I may be proved wrong though.

But I bow to your statistics on the leaf.:smashin::cool:

TBF I thought you were taking the urine, that is why I rated it funny. No offence meant dear chap/chapette

Oh OK. If it's Tesla then yeah, I'd stay clear of Liverpool lol!

Edit - regarding the leaf, I only know because I'm getting one for a 4 day test drive today, had to do my research!

Got to be a Tesla if he's worried where to park, no self respecting scally would be caught dead in a leaf, would they?

The M62 east and westbound has been hell this week with road closures due to accidents compounding the existing delays that Lee mentioned.

I'd risk it but have an alternative planned just in case

Just checked over on the motoring forum and it seems as though the Doc is buying a leaf. So charge points would need to be factored in on the drive to Liverpool.

Once in Liverpool park up at the Albert Dock or the Liverpool one car park. The dock has loads of nice restaurants and plenty to do to kill time. Beatles museum, maritime museum and a few new ones very close. You'll be about 5 minutes from the ferry terminal there.

Already factored in a charge, Birch Services on the M62.

That's why I'm wary of taking the route BB3Lions suggested. A little more off the beaten track and less rapid charger spots. Still workable of course.

Just how bad is the M62?

And you folks are not painting a pretty picture of Liverpool BTW... I think I'll just go straight to the ferry!

How bad is the M62=. Think driving to Ireland - without a ferry..

Liverpool is not bad - used to be but not anymore.

Liverpool is great if you stay close to the Albert Dock there are plenty of reasonable choices, as above it's close to the ferry too.

There are plenty of other places to be berated by our resident EV fans on here, but this about a road trip from Leeds > Liverpool let's keep it on track :)

    Lol, let's rephrase...

Where would be nice to stop for a bite at a safe distance from Liverpool?

Journey from leeds to Liverpool at that time should be fairly clear, 50mph in place about 6-7 miles before birch services and right up to the m62 to Liverpool junction but shouldn't be a bother.

Loads to do in Liverpool just thinking of stuff that doesn't involve loads of walking for your dad, if he's sprightly enough then there's more than just the dock.

This is my suggested route. Took the slightly longer distance to avoid tolls.

    Warrington maybe?

Don't be put off by the Liverpool comments, it's fine if you stick to the main docks area. It's just like any other large city, don't go wandering into Toxteth or similar and you'll be just fine.

If I collect the car at lunchtime and then get something to eat near Pontefract, I'll only really have a few hours to kill on the other side or en route. Probably not enough time to do much tbh.

Anyone know how early you can check in for the Stena? They only have 2 on board chargers so I need to book early. If I can charge overnight on the ferry I'll be able to get probably all the way home without a stop.

I know what you mean, my own uncle wouldn't park in certain parts of Derry all his life, partly silly, partly common sense, partly good old sectarianism!

It's more that I would rather get settled and have dinner somewhere quieter, a nice village pub or the like.
