I've just had a very interesting "screen chat" with a guy from Sky....
....A while ago (early September I think) I enquired about adding an additional mini to my existing Q silver + 1x mini...at the time I was informed that an additional mini would enter me into a new 12/18 month contract and it would be an engineer install, suffice to say I left it at the time...

In my screen chat today I was informed that I could have an additional mini with no contract and further more it would be a self install...just pay your £99 "activation" and they will post the mini out to you....Can anybody else confirm...or indeed is this common knowledge?

Well I’ve just subscribed to Sky as a new customer and each additional mini was £99 each. Considering they are plug and play I would assume what you’ve just been told is correct.

That’s good news if it’s true as before you had to pay £50 installation fee.

Agreed yes...but they have always been plug and play...yet sky always insisted on an engineer install...I was just wondering If anybody else was aware of this change in policy?

Yes just £99, but I paid £49 for mine a couple of months back, but that was with the new main box. Had an install fee, but that also got me a new dish/lnb so not too bad. Wan't a 3rd/4th unit but waiting for the next offer.

    I got an extra mini
A few weeks ago the box was free but they said £99 for installation in case the need to put in Wi-fi extenders
Guy was in and away in 5 minutes

Any increase on the monthly sub when adding a 2nd mini?

I'm awaiting a callback from Sky to confirm when an engineer can hand-in an additional SkyQ mini-box. I'm hopeful I'll hear when within the next hour or so.

It takes an engineer to "hand-in a box"?:D

Apparently their 'system' doesn't allow them to post it out to me directly, so it's an engineer visit to personally hand it to me for my self-install.

I was initially given a date of next Sunday, 12 November, but have since found an earlier slot the previous day, Saturday 11 November via the My Sky app.

Other than waiting a week for the additional mini, I can't really complain as I re-negotiated another 12 months of the full SkyQ package for £44.20 a month along with a free second mini-box.

I think that logi was questioning the use of the word 'engineer' rather than the actual method of delivery.:rotfl: I doubt if Sky would pay a fully paid up engineer to hand a box to you.

I was merely sharing what Sky told me. I've just spotted an engineer a few doors along from me and he said he'd need to scan the system after fitting an additional mini-box. When I told him it's a self-install he said that's not possible. Crossed-wires I think

Lol, by ‘scan the system’ what they mean is they’ll connect a tablet to your WiFi to make sure all of the boxes are on the network.

Absolutely. It's a bloody joke. I've been 30-odd minutes on the phone trying to get Sky to get the engineer along the road to give me a mini

They won’t do that, the ‘engineers’ don’t carry spares for additional installs apparently.

I understand they carry some additional stock in the event of a failure during an install.

I've aborted my call with Sky as I wasn't getting anywhere and will now wait until Saturday.

The engineer has been more than 45 minutes fitting an additional mini box a few doors along from me

The Sky engineer has just this minute left the house along the road. That was over an hour to fit an additional mini-box lol

What, you mean they just take any Tom, Dick or Harry, give them a week’s training, a van and a drill and set them on their way?

Can’t see it to be honest...

Yes! Exactly that, but I'm not sure about the week.:D You don't actually need an engineering degree to be qualified to bolt a Sky dish to the side of a house, drill a hole for the cable and cobble together their networking stuff.:rotfl:

I ordered a third Mini box for my Sky Q silver system on 31 Oct, due for 'Engineer' installation on 28 Nov.

No possibility of self install (as I assume the 'Engineer' will go through the WiFi shenanigans if I wanted it on the other side of the stone walled mansion, but it's not - it's going in the room above the Sky Q Silver).

Also no mention of a max of four devices at anyone time (across iPad and Mini), but I assume this is still a restriction.

The Sky engineer ought to arrive shortly with the additional Q mini I negotiated.

It's going into the bedroom where my previous Q mini was located. Furthermore, it's hard-wired so essentially it ought to be plug and play.

I made it quite clear to Sky this is a self-installation and that no fees are pending for the additional Q mini or the said engineer.

I'll revert back with the outcome as soon as practically possible...

Did you not have to pay up front for the additional mini before they even booked you an install date ?

I haggled and got the additional Q mini for free. I also told them I would not pay for an engineer if they insisted on sending one out with the additional Q mini

Sky guy come and fitted the additional Q mini. It took longer for the software update on the box more than anything else. Everything is working well via my wired network.

Did you haggle when re-contracting or you just asked for another mini mid contract...
