I would be grateful for any advice here - I'm really getting in a muddle over just what I SHOULD consider and realistically what budget might be appropriate.

As you can see from my specs below, my speaker system is based on a Ruark package, initialy recommended and demo'd courtesy of my local specialist Soundcraft HiFi.

So, prologues at the front and the epilogues currently at the rear. Would I really get a significant benefit by adding something like the monitor audio silver Sfx and spending £300 (ish), to upgrade the speaker package initially to 6.1 (what the VA555ES is capable of) and 7.1 later (by bolting on an extra amp).

OR, for the effects speakers, would I be just as well getting a much cheaper set at say £100.

The reason I mention the monitor Audio speakers is because of a visit to Sevenoaks HiFi today.

Should I be considering anything else if I am to do proper justice to the current Ruark set up?

Hope someone out there can clear up the confusion.

can you get hold of any Ruarks like those you are already using..... this would likely be better than the MA solution (with which i have no experience).

    Thanks for the reply buns.

Epilogue 1's have been superceded by, as far as I can remember, rather expensive Epilogue 2's - I'll have to check that out.

The reason I was looking at the MA speakers was because the guy in Sevenoaks reckoned I should be looking at specifically surround speakers as opposed to what he thought were primarily HiFi speakers - ie the Epilogues.

That's something else I'll have to ckeck out. The Ruarks were bought as a package by advice from Soundcraft - I'm sure they wouldn't have wrongly advised HiFi speakers for the rears in preference to proper surround speakers?

So is it not a good idea to have different rear effect speakers from the fronts/sides?

There is no such thing as "proper surround speakers" unless you refer to bipole speakers that many people use at the rear.

A lot of people use direct radiating speakers at the rear which tend to be either similar or smaller versions of the type of speaker used at the front.

I haven't heard the speakers that you are talking about but in general it isn't a good idea to mix manufacturers in your rear array as they may be tonally different.

agreed with Ian...... even the speakers that claim to be specialised rears, well they arent tonal matches so its arguable whether they actually gain anything at all

Well it turns out that the prologues, dialogue centre and the epilogues are now discontinued anyway - Ruark have a dedicated HC setup - I don't know if they are available individually, but I'll let you know. I certainly don't want to have to replace the whole lot.

Looks like this upgrade might be turning out to be a bit more expensive than anticipated:(
