I'm off to Canada and am trying to find out how to add maps of Canada to my UK Garmin SatNav.
    Anyone actually done this.

Don't know. Just assumed you could add any maps.
Maybe you can't and that's why I'm having trouble finding anything specific on the internet :(

Smartphone? "Here We Go" (or similar)? All for free and up to date. It's what I'd be doing.

I agree, I'd just use a smart phone. And if you haven't got a tariff that allows international data simply download the maps whilst in the UK or connected to wifi.

Why not just have a look at Garmin's website? I'm sure they will be more than happy to sell you any map you want!

You can do this a couple of ways.
    • You can head over to the Garmin website and buy their maps containing Canada which you can then download to your sat nav.
    • You can head over to Free worldwide Garmin maps from OpenStreetMap and download routable maps of Canada for free and copy the downloaded map file to your sat-nav to the correct location. These maps will look different to the Garmin ones, may have different quirks, and you won't get things like lane guidance. The coverage will also likely be different to the Garmin maps.
The simplest way is to buy Garmin maps and they will work and you will have support from Garmin but they will cost money.

I have bought US maps for a Garmin sat nav in the past as it was cheaper than hiring a sat nav out there and I could use my device which I was used to and knew how to operate.

Buy, bought, money. I seem to have completely managed to avoid doing that, and I'm more than happy about it.
