active desktop recovery

I improperly unplugged my laptop,and on reboot, I get a screen with a white background (instead of blue), with a triangle containing an exclamation mark, and a message that the Active desktop has been turned off. There is also a button to Reactivate the Active Desktop.

When I click on it, I get a message about a script error ("Object does not support this action"), and am asked whether I want to continue running scripts on that page.

Replying Yes or No makes no difference. Nothing happens. The white screen remains.

It is a Dell Inspiron 1501. The OS is XP Pro.

In the script error box, it identifies a URL as file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/anitac/Application%20Data/Microsoft/Internet%20Explorer/Desktop.htt

Other info in the error message : Line 65, Char 1, Code 0

I have rebooted mutliple times since then.

Aso, when I click on My Documents, I get the following message:

"This page has an unspecified security risk. Do you want to continue"
