Relatively new to all this so advice would be good. One of the glossy mags recently recommended these two as a package. I went to a hifi specialist who sugested that for £2000 you should spend about £1300-1500 on the speakers because you wouldnt get the best from the amp with cheaper speakers.

I want to buy a speaker and an amp (and upgrade the TV and DVD player at a later date) that will work well with movies AND music. Would anyone out there recommend this package - any other suggestions for speaker/amp that retail for £2000 all in?

    Thanks in advance.

It may retail for that but you sbould be able to pick up the amp for about £900 and the speakers for £750 or so. I suggest going 2nd hand though to get far greater valve for money, particularly with electronics. Unless you are in dire need of iLink you would save a load of money going for the Pioneer 2011 over the AX5i, I think there is one in classifieds at the moment for about £480.

I have no experience of the speakers so I can't help you there.

    Hi Wilsot
Superfi are doing the Acoustic energy 3b for £650 which is a very good price saying it used to be a grand. If you like to listen to music and movies i should have a look at the new nad range of receivers you can get the nad t763 for £800 which will really rock with music you can then get a dedicated cd player with the money you have saved with decent cables.
I have owned the nad t752 and it made other receivers sound really crap with music.
    Hope this helps cheers Gonzo.:)
PS you can check the new nads on www.avland.co.uk.

Why, what's wrong with the M&K's, too bright?

Back on topic: A pioneer AX3i and Castle Compact speakers with upgraded sub, say B&W 675 would be in this price range. A much better idea may be to spend a little more on some Mordaunt Short THX speakers to go with the Pioneer amp (~2200).

    Hi russ
The m&ks are superb with movies, with music they seem to lack warmth,i should imagine most people would be very happy with the music side they arnt bad far from it but iam a fussy bugger.will be looking to spend around £2000 on the front three and hopefully have great sound with music and movies if possible.
    Cheers Gonzo.

2k on the front three. Sounds very nice indeed! May I respectfully suggest the Monitor Audio Gold Reference range and Martain Logan Electrostatics (may need to be secondhand)?

Thanks for your posts. I have ordered the Evo 3Bs (at £650).

I now need to make a decision about the amp I have ruled out the AX5i & will go for something cheaper - I think I'll post a new thread in the relevant group...

    Cheers,

    Wilsot.
