According to French site, Minimachines, Acer will be the first Microsoft partner to release a smaller form Windows tablet. The report which has now been removed at the request at Acer suggests that they are at work on an 8-inch device, named the Iconi W3.

According to Minimachines, the tablet will be adequately, if not spectacularly, equipped for survival with a 1.8GHz Intel Atom Z2760 processor and 2GB of RAM.

Microsoft hinted last week that they were already investigating smaller devices for its muted Windows 8 launch effort which hasn't quite gone as well as Redwood would have hoped.

Minimachines didn't reveal the display specs but it's likely the resolution would be competitive with the Nexus 7 at 1280-by-800 pixels. The now disappeared piece showed a few accessories including a dockable keyboard and fold-out case.

Quite whether Asus's insistence on removal came about because Minimachines was on the money, or way off, remains to be see but smaller Windows tablets are most definitely on the way.
