Acer aspire 8930g. How do i connect my video camera?

Could anyone help me with the following and explain in simple terms.
I am trying to connect my (old)panasonic nv-gx7 to my acer aspire 8930g laptop. my laptop does not have a firewire port but does have an express card 54 slot, but Im not sure what this does/can do etc. Am I getting close with this slot or barking up the wrong tree.?
Can anyone tell me what I will need to do this.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

Thanks geoff, thats the sort of thing but I dont have a PCMCIA port. Can you get a similar firewire adapter as an express card 54? I have looked but dont seem to be able find one.
Many thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Firewire 800 is overkill for a camcorder as it wont be able to use the extra speed. A bog standard firewire 400 Expresscard adapter such as This (ignore the PCMCIA ref as it states in the details it is Expresscard) will do all you need to capture from a miniDV camcorder.
