I've just spent the last half hour successfully configuring the AVG email scanner to work on my outgoing emails via the SMTP server using Thunderbird as a client. That works now.

However, I use IMAP email accounts (because they're better than POP3 ones ;) ) and the AVG email scanner doesn't seem to work with IMAP servers. Has anyone else figured this one out? :)

It's made particularly tricky as I have 2 IMAP servers to track.

AVG is an antivirus program that has the benefit of having a free version. It's reputed to be quite good and details are here

Yup, AVG is antivirus. Thunderbird is the Mozilla email client and IMAP is an email protocol. :)

POP3 limits you to a single machine as it downloads any messages to the HD whilst IMAP retains them on a server. Plus IMAP has significantly better folder rules and junk rules available if it's properly implemented. :)

Outlook doesn't deal with the inherent limitations of the POP3 system. ISPs provide it as standard because it doesn't cause them any hassle on their own servers but drops it all on the user.

I'd be interested to hear a single way that POP3 is better than IMAP although that's not the point of the thread.

IMAP was a good thing until Outlook came along, but that was 8 years ago.... :D

They're honestly no different at all from the user end, everything you get with IMAP you get with POP, as long as you're using Outlook as the client.

MS don't seem to like IMAP?, and never have since Exchange 5, so they effectively did away with it when Outlook97 was born....
With Outlook you effectively get all the user benefits of IMAP from a POP3 mailbox... :)

I have upto date Zone alarm and have never had a virus

Just don't download dodgy looking stuff, and only download from sites that don't look dodgy. I only full PC scan with Norton once a year, which wastes a couple of hours
