...originally looking at a Kiss DP-500 DVD player or suchlike to enable me to watch DivX films over my home network, but I wondered if I could spec & build a SFF PC to do the same job. Just wondering if anyone has done this and got any advice on equipment/suppliers....

    Regards,

Don't know what SFF PC is, but for basic DVD playback, all you need is something like this:

    Cheap PC Case £10:

    Mobo (has lan)£14 :

    CPU £30:

    Fan £4:

    Memory £20:

    Graphics card £19:

Sound card with spdif (via jack adapter)£17:

    DVD drive £16:

    Hard drive 120gig £54:

Other stuff like keyboard, mouse and floppy can cost as little as £10 for the lot. You can reduce the cost by using a smaller hard drive, but the cost here is still under £200.

I have to point out that the tv out picture quality on most graphics cards is average if you use the s-video or composite out. The best image is achieved via DVI or VGA.

Iv'e watched a lot of divx movies and dvd's via HCPC to TV over the years with a variety of video cards(mostly g-forces),Picture quality is very much card dependent amongst other things.Last month I went out and bought a medion divx-dvd player from amazon for £50! and all I can say is wow! FORGET HCPC if your not outputting to a plasma or projector. The machine I bought for £50 beats the pants off my £600 custom built(by me  ) HCPC.Now dont get me wrong HCPC is fantastic! just not for viewing DVD or Divx via a CRT TV.Build one by all means but not if all you want it for is to watch divx on your telly it's a total waste of money.
