A router with good parental controls/filtering (including https)

Currently our ISP is Virgin Media and whilst the MAC address blocking with time limits works well, domain blocking doesn't support https, but that is needed. So, I thought about buying a router and using the Super Hub 2 in modem mode.

I've been reading reviews of various routers, but often they don't go in-depth about the filtering/parental controls. What I need is:
  • Timed MAC address blocking (with the Super Hub 2 I can set up multiple rules, so there are weekday and weekend ones)
  • Filter list support per MAC address/device (I noticed some of them support filtering with Norton services, for example), but not just for "adult" (that theme is not too much of a problem, as she has no interest in it right now) but a wider range of "inappropriate material". It should support adding URLs/domains (including https) to a custom list, too. Again, this should be applicable per device/MAC address.
  • A traffic log (domains/urls) that is retained between reboots.
  • The router should also have Gigabit Ethernet and Wireless-N.
I know I could use software on the PC side to do filtering (and in fact I do some basic filtering via the hosts file), but I need it to apply across multiple devices (iPad and PC, possibly an iPhone too).

I also do some basic filtering on the iPad and iPhone using the iOS website restrictions.

It wouldn't be a problem installing and configuring Linux to do all this (I have done similar before), but I would prefer a low power device with WiFi and Ethernet ports built in, so I thought a dedicated off-the-shelf device might be better route.

Any suggestions on an off-the-shelf solution or hardware choice for a custom solution?

You can play with the Asus firmware here ASUS Wireless Router RT-AC66U - Network Map to see if it does what you need.

There are modified firmwares you can install on the Asus routers which may provide the services you need such as
Merlin Asuswrt-Merlin - custom firmware for Asus routers | Merlin's Tower
Tomato Welcome to the Tomato USB web site - TomatoUSB
Thanks, mate, this seems like exactly what I need, especially the Merlin firmware, which will be fun to play around with, too. :D
