Hi guys and gals...

Quick Q,

A friend of mine has just bought this TV
Sony KDL40D3500U

Now, the TV I've been looking at is this one (after much research)
Panasonic TH50PZ70B

But I've also seen that Empire Direct have now got
Panasonic TH46PZ85B

at only £100 more than the 50 inch 70 series... now I think I'm impartial between 46" and 50", 50" is possibly slightly too big, but anthing under 46" is too small. Is the 85 series good? I'd not read much about them, they are pretty new...

What are people's thought's and opinions, I want a better TV than my friend, and going for plasma over LCD, I know LCD have a much higher contrast ratio...

Choice of size depends on your viewing distance and that will also determine if you can derive benefits from fullHD. What is your viewing distance really? At 10-12 feet 46" is good enough imo and definitely PZ85 is newer than PZ70.

LCDs are brighter than plasmas as a general trait but LCDs do not have a higher contrast ratio. Contrast ratio is bent, murdered and [email protected]#ed by manufacturers, so i would not consider those numbers to be true. Moreover LCD manufacturers only quote dyanamic CR compared to Plasmas that quote native CR. Plasmas' native CRs are generally higher than LCDs Dynamic CR let alone LCDs native CRs. Picture Quality of a panel cannot be judged by CRs. Plasmas not only have better blacks than LCDs, they show more natural and realistic colors and also have much better shadow details. Plasmas have higher refresh rates/response times and have 100Hz so they look better better than LCDs. For Plasmas you have to be particulary careful when its brand new, you need to have special settings during this running-in period, details here:
