A quick question about input to a Tempest

My tempest arrived yesterday but am still waiting on my PE plate amp 250 watt from Parts Express. I am dying to try it out right now, so is it alright if I hook up my ordinary hifi to the driver. It is 2 X 100watts @ 8 Ohms. If i feed in the LFE channel from my dvd player into the hifi and connect up the speaker terminals to the driver, could it damage it since it is 8 ohms (the plate amp is 4 Ohms).

Also do I connect up one speaker terminal to one of the tempest connectors and the other hifi terminal to the other tempest connector. Or can I feed both channels to one of the tempest connectors.

If you could reply quick I would be delighted since I want to try it out before the parents come home. I have a slight feeling they are going to tell me to get rid off it.

Cheers

You've lost me on what you're asking.. :p

But, can I ask where you got the driver from and how much folding you parted with..?

You could try it (just hook one of your speaker wires up to the driver, + to +, - to - ).

It won't sound very good though outside of a cabinet, so it's really a bit pointless other than perhaps as a functional check for the driver, if that's an issue!

I hooked it up anyway. I hooked just one channel from the old hifi so thats just 100 watts. I had the cabinet made, just waiting on the plate amp now.

I got the Tempest driver from Adire Audio. It cost me 185 Euro including shipping (it took about 5 weeks).

I haven't heard that many subs but I am pleased with this so far. It still isn't quite finished. I just couldn't wait to give the room a bit of a rock and it did, including the single pane windows out in the hall. Not bad for 100 watts.
Hopefully it will be even better with the 250watt plate amp (measured 285watts). I got that for 165 Euro (inc shipping, hasn't arrived yet).
I am pleased for a sub that only cost me about 400 Euro. Thats only £280 STG. If I could build this, I can't see more people dont try it.
I'll post a few pix when the plate amp arrives and I tidy it up. I rushed it abit on Friday, but I knew I would have to take it apart again whenever the amp arrives.

I was expecting to pay the 21% tax but I must of got away with it some how. The box was ticked as merchandise. Hopefully I will get away with it again with the plate amp. As far as I have heard from people, it just depends if he wants to bother taxing you or not. I think they don't really bother for small packages that aren't worth that much. Suits me to the ground.

If it was delivered by a courier firm (fedex, dhl, etc), it wouldn't surprise me if you got a customs/import duty + admin fee bill in the post from them about a month from now..
