Have you ever watched a movie and been surprised by it? I don't mean a twist at the end that you did not see coming, I mean a movie that you thought you would hate or would never find your self watching because its not "your thing". Have you seen it and really enjoyed it? has it got you into other movies of the same genre? Were you forced to sit through it by your partner and were pleasantly surprised? or did you just take a chance on a DVD rental at blockbusters. I would like to see your thoughts on this . :)

There is nothing recently that I have seen that I can think of, but I remember Taking a risk on the movie "The usual suspects" a long time ago. I took the then girlfriend out for a meal and then we fancied renting a movie for the evening ( amongst other things  ) Of to the video shop we went without any idear of what we we fancied to watch. I can remember that a few of the titles that we wanted were not in ,so , not really being a fan of the crime thriller type movie, I was talked in to getting it by the girl friend and off we went.
What can I say, I wont go in to a review of the film but I can say that this movie really surprised me ( not because of the twist ) but because of the way the whole film was put together. Sharply made and acted ,it really kept my interest and in turn widened my film viewing horizons a little.

    Dave.

i'd probably have to say Love Actually, i didn't watch it for a very long time because i thought it'd be another rubbish british romantic comedy like four weddings or bridget jones, and it turned out to be so much better :)

    Fight Club...

I started watching it with the preconception that it was just another action/fight movie... Boy was I wrong

Another that pleasantly surprised me was Forrest Gump. I thought it would be over smaltzy suggary feel good movie and it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. :)

    Toy Story for me.

I assumed it was going to be some sort of childish movie so read my newspapers whilst an Ex loaded it into the video. It didn't take long before I was hooked

Bored rigid in Munich 20 years ago I went into the only English language cinema to see a film I knew nothing about, purely because it had Helen Mirren and John Gielgud in it. From the few adverts I thought it would be a Roman era classic, maybe a modern day Ben Hur. Yes you've guessed it. Surprising it definitely was.

    Ah - that film!

Recently got a rather nice French R2 two-disc set of this.

Pic quality (anamorphic) is a massive improvement on the R1 (non-anamorphic version. Everything "glistens" just that little bit more. ;)

Man in the Iron Mask (Leonardo di Caprio version).
The wife wanted to see it. I expected it to be crepe but enjoyed it. Actually, this was the turning point for me regarding di Caprio - he's a fine actor IMO (but I still cannot see what the girls get all excited about).

    Fight Club for me too.

Saw the trailers and let the movie and DVD release pass me by...then happened to catch it on Sky movies last year and was blown away by it. Ordered the R1 within seconds of the movie ending ;)

    Sixth Sense

(not least because you're pretty much obligated to watch it twice)

Haven't seen 'The Village' yet, but I'm expecting it to be just as good

Ghost World: This was completely not what I was expecting, but what a superb film, in a more thoughtful way.

The Full Monty: I didn't want to go see this, "I don't want to see a film about blokes stripping", but I laughed just as much as everyone else in the group.

Love Actually: Been mentioned a lot here, but I wasn't expecting much from this and was pleasantly surprised.

The Village was also not quite what I was expecting. I won't say any more so I don't spoil anything. Still think 6th Sense was his best though.
