From an interview with an American reporter on the release of "The Fellowship of the Ring", Sir Ian McKellan gives a textbook example of how to deal with a monumentally stupid question:

Journalist: "Don't you think Gandalf should have had a love interest?"

Ian McKellan: "He does my dear. His name is Orlando Bloom."

I do. Putting in a love interest into JRR Tolkiens work is like saying one of the main characters is a puff. You just wouldn't do it.

But I thought that J R R Tolkein HAD written a love interest in his book - that of Ara-whats-his-name and the Elf (Liv Tyler).

That was Aragon's (Strider) love interest, not Gandalfs.

I mean changing the large portion of a book just to appeal to the americans. ie, adding in machine guns etc. :D

See, I think that remark is just Ian McKellen playing the old queen in order to shock the reporter.

Perhaps he was telling the truth. I've read something about the end of the third film being slightly different from the book. Perhaps Peter Jackson has written in a Gandalf - Legolas gay love shock story line.

That would be the biggest cringe moment in HollyWood history. Can you imagine Gandalf saying 'Here Legolas, hold my Staff.'

The question is stupid no doubt, but the answer strikes me as a quick, off-the-cuff riposte; both dry and witty, as well as an excellent put-down of such an lame-brained question.
