'Once were warriors' circa 1995. It popped up on the syllabus for my A level film Studies course. About modern Mauris (sp?) and their descendants in New Zealand. Domestic violence, street gangs, alchoholics, arrogance. It was almost an NZ version of a Loach flick, but the *happy* ending twisted it back towards Hollywood just a teeny bit. It really does get brutal in places and could offend quite a few people, the only downers are the under developed sub plots - otherwise it's good viewing. It's out on VHS and DVD and is quite easy to get hold of (HMV stock it).
