    Final bit of advise needed…

First many thanks for the advice provided on previous posts! J

My dilemma….. I am happy with my system and do not feel the need to upgrade after realizing that what I’ve got is really good and I am happy with the performance. However I recently completed a bit of work for someone which means I have about a 500 quid credit at a local HiFi dealer.

…. So I’ve got 500 to spend on my system and it can’t be converted into cash.

My current set-up has really opened me eyes (ears?) to how good CDs can really sound! When I first made my purchase stereo performance was secondary with movies being the priority.

I am now considering using the credit for an Arcam P85 and adding a bit of cash and also getting a Arcam CD72 to improve the stereo/music performance. Is this a wise move, or has anyone else got a suggestion?

That sounds like a good move to improve the stereo performance and CD playback.

Certainly go and give them a demo and if you like them, and think they are a sufficient step up from what you have then go for it.

If you want to improve music mostly ... compare the improvement with the P85 and a CD72, to something like a Rotel RA01 or NAD C350 with a Rotel RCD03 or NAD C521i.

    Hi jhjerpe

I was very happy with my old system's performance (Marantz SR4200 AV Receiver and CD4000 cd player), but wanted better stereo sound.

So after some great advice from Sounddog and Wilber.
I decided to get a seperate stereo amp and better cd player.
I manged to get a 2nd hand Arcam Alpha 7R amp and Arcam Alpha 7 cd player.

The improvement with stereo was great.

So I am a very happy bunny.

So I would think your idea, could be quite a good move interms of improving music sound.

Regards and Thanks again to Sounddog and Wilber for the advice.

One more question..... am I better of using something like the P85 (power amp) and the 2011 as the pre-amp for stereo, or getting an integrated stereo amp like the A85?

You may well be better of getting something like the A85 as one of the main reasons AV amps do not sound so good in stereo is the pre-amp stage, so you may not hear a great deal of difference with a power amp.

I have got the A85 myself and a Denon 2802, if I use the Denon's pre-amp stage and the Arcam as a power amp then there is not much improvment in stereo but once the CD player is plugged straight into the Arcam then you can really hear the improvement.

I have not heard or used the 2011 so adding a power amp may be a worthwhile improvement if the pre-amp stage is up to scratch but as always go and demo first.

Got the first part of my upgrade last night, the Arcam CD72 - it's made a big difference! Now waiting for the Arcam amp to arrive at the dealer.

The stereo pre-amp stage on the 2011 is pretty good, not up to the A85 but close as far as my ears are concerned. Especially combined with the performance increase of the CD72 over my cheap Sony SACD player.

So now currently getting the P85, not so much for improving the stereo performance but as a first step in the long term in moving towards separate power amps and processor for movies. Instead of putting extra money towards the A85 I was going to spend this on the interconnects instead!

It’s not to late to change my mind…..

When that upgrade bug hits, it always turns out to be more expensive than you first think. I guess its time to get on your knees and beg to your bank manager :D

Got it all hooked up…. Pre-outs from the 2011 to processor ‘in’ on the A85, with this it’s is a joy to use with an AV amp as it allows you to set the gain for one of the inputs so the volume / gain changes automatically when switching from CD to AV. Initial impressions are good but the main improvement is still the CD72! My left speaker has just had a new driver fitted as it was damaged at the weekend, so need to run it in, only problem is work is calling!

Will give full feedback after a few days use.

    Sounds good.

I fully expect you to buy the multi-channel input card when it appears. :D

When I first got my A85 I was impressed but I found it needed a good 6 weeks of running in before it really started to sound like a £800 amp. Once you have fully run yours in then you may change your mind on what has given the biggest improvement.

I've just done a similar upgrade - but instead of new Arcams I went for a second hand FMJ CD23 and A22. I'll be picking them up next week so I'll report my findings then. BTW, what interconnect are you using between the Arcams?

Nothing fancy at the moment, just 20 quid QED ones... still need to be convinced that spending more is worth it!
