    Hi

I have a Sony 991 AV Hifi - getting a little long in the tooth now but it gets by :) Anyway it has a CD Optical Digital Output which seems a strange thing - would have expected it to be an input not an output. My manual has long since disappeared so if anyone is able to advise more on this port and how it works that would be appretiated.

Yes - the optical out socket can be used either to connect to a digital recorder such as MiniDisc, CD-R, or DAT deck. Alternatively, it can also be used to feed the digital signal from your CD player into an off-board DAC, which could lead to either an improved sound quality or different presentation of sound.
