Hi all, did a search and surprised I didn't find anything.

I'm trying to play back an episode of Simpsons I missed and just after the intro I get a 8002880C error! If I retry and skip that point it carries on playing. I've tried playing this through WMP11 and off a USB stick and it seems that it's the AVI that's the problem. It also happens with a couple of other avi's I've tried playing.

Has anyone else had this issue? I'm guessing it's due to the way it was encoded, but then I wouldn't have expected any of the avi to play at all. The same file plays fine through the Xbox and PC. I'm guessing this is a Sony firmware issue that they could fix if they were bothered.

Cheers. Yeah, I did have a look and it seemed to be an issue with the way the avi was coded. I didn't find anything too substantial though. Kind of a bummer for me because I mainly use the PS3 as a media centre, but now with at least two avi's not supported via this error (as well as the ones that don't play back at all), I'm wondering if I should make the Xbox my main media centre.

Yeah, it's not a major problem, I just don't want to do it every time. In fact I normally just turn on the Xbox 360 and use that instead, I was just curious how much of a problem it was and hoping that Sony would fix it in a later firmware release.

I think that Sony are trying to stop people playing certain copies, maybe? That's why I never update my PS3. Mine is Version 2.0. Luckily I never use it online.

i don't think Sony are trying to stop us from playing copies because other wise they wouldn't give a update where we can play back Divx and AVi format videos.i think they rushing in updating it and messing up other parts of the playstation.

Taking out a feature is a concious decision - they're not just knocking something out by accident.

This is where homebrew needs to step in imo.

Wow! I don't check for a while and when I do, my threads back on the first page again :D

Um, not really noticed this issue recently. And that's saying something considering I swapped in a 320gb HDD and have all my media files stored on the PS3. I've not seen the particular 8002880C in a while, but have had to recode certain files as it was easy to tell from the play list whether the file was supported or not (avi thumnail not visible).

For the earlier poster, I use either VirtualDub or SUPER to convert. VirtualDub is pretty powerful, but SUPER is great for batch conversions.

thx TheBiggestLie :D just re encoded one of the said files with SUPER and the problems gone, I had to play around for a while with the setting though to avoid loosing picture quality :)

still though, I sure hope sony sorts this out, its pritty sad that the ps3 cant handle a little glitch in a divx file without crapping out, hell the xbox360 playes right threw huge glitches like a PC would. (not that I even own a xbox)

No problem. If you double click on the file, SUPER gives you the information about the file. You can then just select the nearest bitrate and audio settings to match to give you the equivalent quality!
