Hi I need a 7m+ optical lead as I'm moving my dvd player due to a new projector.
Any ideas for a decent cable at a decent price( under £80).

    Thanks

VanDamme supply a 10m Toslink Optical cable for well below £80.00.

We use and supply a lot of the shorter ones and have never had any issues with the longer ones we've supplied.

    Best regards

    Joe

What would be the maximum length an optical cable could be extended to?

Well manufactured optical fibres can propagate light hundreds if not thousands of kilometres with very little trouble. Photonic crystal fibres aren't widely available yet but have even better properties.

The problem in home cinema is that the cable connectors (usually Toslink) aren't great so it's worth spending a bit to make sure that the connection and lens are of good quality. The other limiting factor is that LEDs are used to produce the light which is sent down the cables, the dispersion characteristics of LED light down optical fibres aren't great so really you're limited to a few tens of metres in the HC environment. :)
