I'm currently upgrading my gaming computer from the ground up - I posted a thread some weeks back asking for the difference between the 64 bit and plain vanilla athlon cpu's - that question having been expertly answered, I now find myself slightly confused by the following - I'm purchasing a pci-e gfx card and having been more than happy with my agp nvidia 6800 (128), decided to purchase the 256meg pci-e equivilant but whilst checking out benchmarks in 'Thomas's Hardware Guide', was surprised to find that the 128 meg 6600gt more often than not exceeds the fps of the 256meg 6800 - indeed, the benchmarks based on the likes of half life 2, doom 3, far cry 3d mark 05 show that the 6600gt more often than not wipes the floor with its 12 pipelined brother so heres my quandry - is this for real? can a £110 6600gt outgun a £190 256 meg 6800?

    That can't be right!

Have you got the link to the benchmarks?

Here you go Reznor:- Toms VGA chart VII It does indeed show the 6800 being beaten by the 6600gt in some of the tests.

Not really surprising, as a standard 6800 has a chip clock of 325 and a memory clock of 700, whereas a 6600GT is 500 and 900 respectively. Since they both are 128Mb cards, the only advantage the 6800 has is a 256 bit bus and 12 pipelines, as opposed to the 128 bit bus and 8 pipelines of a 6600GT. Also, many 6600 GTs are even faster than standard, the fastest probably being this one:

which has 540 and 1150 speeds.

Not sure about benchmarking but I have 2 6600GTs in SLI
Just got a 24" Dell - HL2 at 1920 res with EVERYTHING on high runs like a dream

Mate has 1 6800Gt and notices slowdown at 1280 res

    very strange

yes but he could be being held back by his processor and/or other components.

Right now, I'm still totally confused - according to the benchmarks, a sli'd 6600gt is indeed fast but in some cases, has been beaten by a standalone 6600gt, the 6800 definitely loses out to the 6600gt in terms of speed, the 6800gt would appear to be the best compromise but given its high cost, is a definite no no - there is a 128meg 6800gt chipset but this was not benchmarked so I've no idea how it compares to its 256meg brother so after many hours of checking, comparing and evaluating, I've slimmed down my wishlist to these choices-

    1 - a 256meg 6600gt at around £160
    2 - a pair of 128meg 6600gt's sli'd at around £200+
    3 - a 128meg 6800gt at around £200+
4 - the 6600gt mentioned by bjd which is indeed very fast but only comes with 128meg and costs around £160

BJD - thanks for the link, I've finally made up my mind - I'm going for the leadtek 6800 gt 256meg from overclockers (£179+vat) because at least it guarantees that I won't have to upgrade for some time and I've found out that sli motherboards are'nt cheap!
Its performance in THG's benchmarks are excellent so that solves the performance issue as I'm buying it primarily to play all the current biggies (half life 2, battlefield etc) in conjunction with an amd 64 3200 cpu.
Incidently, the above link for thomas's hardware guide is for agp cards - if you check out the pci-e benchmarks, you'll find the difference between the 6600gt and the 6800 quite striking.
