6 speakers on a 7.1 amp/receiver

I currently have a Yamaha amp/receiver in 5.1 setup. I want to upgrade to add a rear surround speaker ie6.1. The majority of amp/receivers are now 7.1 as I dont have room for a seventh speaker can I use 6 on 7.1 and if so how do I configure the rear surround.
