6.1 inputs on amps

    why do es an amp like marantz 7200 have 6.1 inputs,are there some dvd players with built in 6.1 decoders,i can understand 5.1 inputs for sacd etc,rgrds pat

    You may want to use a dedicated decoder that only decodes but doesn't amplify (maybe a pre-amplification, but not more), and then use the amp only to amplify the signal. I don't know about the dvd players...
    Gurus here may give you more reasons, this is one that came to my mind...

    It's basically there for any future standards that may need a 6 (or 7).1 input.

    It's almost as cheep to produce as the 5.1 input and (potentially) more versatile.

    so there are no dvd players with 6.1 built in i presume,or are there,save buying a new amp,pat
