    Need some advice please.
My brother is upgrading his amp which is a Sony STR-DB930.
He has £400 to spend and ideally would like 6.1

Can anyone recommend anything that would be a step up from the Sony and have (some of) the latest features?

    TIA

OK, after a very quick check I've come up with the following shortlist:

    Pioneer VSX-D812 - £330
    Sony STR-DB1080 - £390
    Yamaha DSP-AX640SE - £400
    Yamaha RX-V640RDS - £350

Anyone have any particular comments on any of those?

Basically he would like 6.1 but he's not that bothered.
    Anything else is a bonus.

I'm more than happy with my Pioneer VXS-D912. Basically the same as the D812 but with a couple of extra bells and whistles. I think both the Yamahas are rated quite highly on here aswell. The Sony I believe is better for movies than music or is it better for music than movies...........?..Anyway, I don't think he'll be disappointed whatever one he chooses.

Happy with my AX640SE. Bought it brand new from Mr Richer and his bonkers prices for £280!

    How about the Denon 1804?
I just got one and am over the chuffing moon with it, and I understand you can get it for £300 now on the tinternet.

My apologies if this is not in the same league as the amps you've mentioned

Thanks for all your replies guys.

Having compared the relative merits of each one, he's decided to go for the Pio D812.
It does everything he wants and is just about the cheapest of the bunch.

    Thanks for your input.
