50" max IF mounting/More if not - recommendations please?

Hi all,

I rent, and my flat has a TV display unit pre-fitted with an IKEA UPPLEVA ORMO Wall bracket for flat screen TV flush mounting - see the mounting here.

A photo of the mounted tv on the display unit, at the distance and angle I view from is below (taken today). The TV currently mounted is 3.5m (~10.5ft) from the edge of the sofa where I'm sat and took the photo from. The diagonal of the total space behind the TV is ~77inches (170*96cm rectangular area) and there's a nice channel routing all the cables out the back.

I've got an LG 43UJ651V on there but it's dying a very early death (assembled 2017 - Poland) due to bad components. A repair bill was quoted at £400 in Dec '20 but unit cost £375; I therefore need to replace it asap. It's physically in A1 condition but now lights up mostly blue (fewer than 20% of the LEDs burn white) so if anyone knows how I can recover some value from it please let me know too.

I've two easy options:
  1. I can purchase a slightly larger TV up to 50" and mount it beautifully and super easily as per the 43" below
  2. I can just buy something significantly larger and find a way of hiding the mountings from sight (unscrew & store + make good on the screw holes.. dunno)
I could also try persuade my landlord to let me remove the bracket and have a more robust VESA mount installed but my landlord is SO uppity about ANY changes to anything usually, that this could just be a dead end.

Questions:

  1. Do I stick with the wall mount and restrict myself to 50"?
    1. If so, which 50" LED TVs do you recommend?
      1. Not interested in OLED - I think the tech is too new to settle on
      2. I don't game; I watch broadcast tv (Freeview sometimes) and stream from Amazon, Netflix etc - main content is:
        1. Action movies, love anything about space (often some dark scenes)
        2. Live Sport
        3. Animated movies (Pixar etc)
      3. Am considering an Apple TV 4K to take advantage of HDR, Dolby Vision and other such nice tricks
      4. I'll pay more if the build quality means it'll last; medium to high end spend here though long warranties help too
      5. The biggest light source is a floor-to-ceiling window to the right (you can just about make it out in the blur)
      6. I hate Android with a passion; I'll avoid it if I can. The Apple TV will make this easier though
    2. If I decide to just put a TV on its feet and hide the exisiting bracket mounting somehow..
      1. What do you recommend given the above criteria? Remember I don't want to compromise on build quality too much (though some retailers are offering 6-year warranties out there which makes it easier to sleep at night)
Thanking you in advance for your tips!

I don't think its the size limit of the bracket that determines which size TV you can fit, but the spacing's, and weight.
If the mount you have supports the same spacing as the TV, it should fit no problem. Weight also shouldn't be a problem, since that bracket is rated for over 130lbs (from a time when TVs did weigh a lot).

You can see all the best buys here:

Sony 49XH9505 is the best option for you. Its sold at larger sizes too. Does come with Android, but as you say you can use an Apple TV instead if you wish.

If its over-budget, consider the 55" Hisense U8Q at costco at the moment for 500.

Your viewing distance is very, very far, so I'd advise going for the biggest size you can afford.

  1. The VESA mounting points on the TV I have are 200x200 (20cmx20cm) which aligns with my measurements - are you saying that as long as I've got the horizontal allowance (denoted by the RED lines below; yellow being the current used allowance) then I should just consider the weight?
    1. If YES, your guide recommends the Sony BRAVIA KD65XH9505BU (300*300 VESA) - know anywhere where the deal is good on this model at the moment with a full-fat 5-6 year warranty?
    2. If No, what am I missing?

Thanking you in advance again!

Slightly lower price here on the Sony. Could seek a price match/beat if preferred

Or refurb and add the warranty

Wow - not a bad deal at all.. I’m now waiting to hear if the understanding I’ve got on spacings is correct. If it is, I can go for a 65”!

Yes, although its a bit strange the mount only has two out of the 4 fittings. Stock is low on 2020 models this time of year, unfortunately they are replaced by overpriced 2021 stock.

Samsung Q90T/Q95T would be the alternative. Or to wait for the price on newer models like the X95J to come down.

Here’s the manual - I’ve got all the fittings. You get two hanging loops for the rail, and 4 bits to attach onto the back of the TV.

So, I’m seeing the 9505BU going for £1400 most places; are you saying that’s likely the 2021 model?

No that’s a 2020 model number. What size is that?

XH9505 55" is still £849 at pcrdirect. (John Lewis and Richer sounds WILL price match) If that's useful at all to you.

@Dodgexander - UPDATE!
So, I 'endured' the dying LG until now in order to have maximum flexibility for some research I was doing on getting a SONY in directly from Japan, but the LG is REALLY dying (half the display sometimes is just fuzzy nonsense and the other half has picture, PLUS the issues reported above.

I've pulled the trigger based on your 'My best value TVs, 2021-2022 Edition'; I've gone Pro, and wishing to stick with webOS for my sins, it's the LG OLED55C1.

Will provide feedback but thank you so much for your help; this landscape is utter madness and it helps no end to have a sane voice with a freely accessible methodical process with which to arrive at a decision that feels sensible in the madness.
