50/100/200/600Hz?

Top end TVs are advertising up to 600Hz. Most threads don't seem to see why 100 is better than 50 (most seem to think 100 can be worse)
Given a good make, does one need lots of Hz to be fairly future proof when everything becomes HD?
Such a price difference but no-one seems to be able to explain why big Hz is the thing to have.
Very confused
