In a DD-EX or DTS-ES setup with additional back speaker (or speakers), when playing “normal” DD or DTS 5.1 material, does the surround output use just the 2 surround (or side) speakers, the 2 rears or the surround and rear units together? ……Or is it an option on some amps?

With Denon you have the following options:

    1. Play nothing,
    2. Play the same signals that are output from SL and SR speakers,
    3. Use the matrix ES/EX decoders anyway to produce unintended surround effects.
