If you had £500 to buy a set of 5.1 speakers, which would you choose (including any special offers you know of) and why?

    Thanks in advance.

I'd go for 2.0 or 2.1 in the first instance, and only add the other speakers when budget allows. £500 for 5 speakers and a sub is a lot less than £100 per component. £500 for 2.1 would get you a BK Gemini for £200, plus a pair of bookshelves and stands for £300. Alternatively you could get a decent pair of second hand floorstanders for £500 (MA Silver S series for instance) that would probably give you enough bass to be going on with, depending on your room size, and would be excellent for both films and music.

You could then add other components: rears, centre if you feel the need, later

I agree with GW43 in some ways, but a lot of people want to get a surround sound system and just want to hear the sound wooshing round the room.

If it were my £500 I'd spend a while eyeing up 2nd hand systems on ebay. If you want something new then the Wharfedale package looks good and comes with an excellent little sub:

It's a really nice sounding package if you believe What Hifi.

Mordaunt Short Avant Premier plus. £479.90 from Peter Tyson with free delivery and cables. Not read too much bad about these and the plus version has the MS309 sub which makes a significant difference to performance.

KEF 2005.2 - I have a set in my bedroom and they are good. Sub not overly powerful but integrates well with satellites (as long as crossover is set at 120HZ). See separate thread here on special offers on these speakers.

That is not the plus! As stated the plus variant comes with a better sub and puts the whole package in a different league...

I too am looking at this sort of region of £500 budget and it apears you can get the following discounted

    MS Premier £249
    MS Premier Plus £379
    MS Genie black £549

    Kef 1005.2 £299.00
    Kef 2005.2 £499.00

I agree with buying into quality, however I rushed into buying what I thought were bargains just see below, matching and expert advice may cost a little more but you live and learn.

    Mission M7c2
    Mission 77ds
    TDL G30 rtl

I am changing, the missions are fine but do not match the TDl as well as I thought, different sized room, nagging Girlfriend and destructive 2 year old, I have boxed up the speakers at the moment and I will sell on the speakers and buy a package.

Anyone know which to pick out of the shortlist above that would match with the amp,dvd player, girlfriend and 2 yr old

Retangular room 6.8 long by 4.5

    Marantz SR4200
    Marantz Dv4100 ose

Yup, those are the ones I'd been looking at - plus the Wharfedale Diamond 9 pack, which What Hifi seem to rate very highly.

Anyone got the Wharfdale package? Happy with it?

I had the Kef 2005s for quite a while and thought them to be an excellent package for their size and money (ignoring the sub for a minute), but your room is quite large and I would worry about them getting a bit lost in all that space. Either that or they would get a real hammering trying to fill it with sound. The 1005s would be a real no-no for the same reason.

IMHO The MS Avant Premier plus would be the best bet from the lists above.

    Cheers russ.will

To be honest I need small rather than large boxes, so I am going to audition the MS range, have they some relationship with Marantz now?

I'd go with the MS plus, highly recommended :smashin:
To answer your question, yes MS are related to Marantz (same parent company, I believe), so you can expect them to be a reasonable match.
