I am having a real nightmare deciding on which Speakers to buy.
The speakers have to perform well musically but they can't have the physical presence of the Evo 3B setup.

I have heard the Genies and was quite impressed , and the other half loves the look of them. In my mind i was sold, and it was just about sourcing them.

Then i read the reviews od the Q4's, with a Q6c center Q Compacts and a PSW2500 Sub, which were excellent.

The good news is that the other half liked the looks of the Q4's and i explained the dimensions of them as she was ok. The bad news is that no-one local has them in stock.

Will i be dissapointed if i don't audition the Kefs before purchasing the Genie's?

Now that we have agreed that either size will fit into my front room, and finacially either will fit into my budget (with a Yamaha AX750 Se) are there major plus points from the larger Kef's?

    Cheers

    Andy

    Andy,

I am using the Q7 system, with Q7 fronts, Q9c, 2 pairs of Q2ds and the 2500 sub. This system is driven by a Denon 3805, and the room is large. These sepakers sound superb in my room, so depending on your room size, I would recommend the Kef range.

Andy - I've ordered the Kef Q package you're thinking of (Q4's; Q6c; Qcompact; PSW2500), I've ordered it with a Yamaha 750SE and they arrive on Friday.

I was in a similar situation to you, Genie's or Kef's. In the end it came down to how important music was to me. Whilist the Genie's were very good for music for a sub/sat system, there was no comparison compared to the midrange offered by the Q4's. Once I found out that I could get the package for a similar price to the Genie's (£810) there was no contest in my mind.

Anyway, I'm eagerly awaiting the Friday delivery, the only annoying thing is that the rear stands have been delayed so I won't get to set it up properly until next weekend

Thats an excellent price. Might have to take a trek up to the St Albans store and have a listen.

What stands did you get for the Qcompacts?

Given the size of the compacts, I narrowed it down to 2 choices:

    - Partington Ansa 100 (£100)
    - Apollo A1/9 (£60)

Both stands are 100cm tall and have a small top plate. I eventually went for the Apollo stands mainly due to price.

I ordered them from superfi although they have low stocks at the moment.

    Thanks for the help.

I finally made a decision and picked up the Kefs in Silver last night. I ended up up at Sevenoaks who were excellent. They couldn't quite price match, but had a good go and saved me a 200 mile round trip.

Must say the Kef's looked beautiful, but by the time i had finished connecting 20 banana connectors, running all the cable and setting up the Yamaha AX750, it was 11.30 pm so i didnt get time to fully audtion anything.

    Roll on the weekend. ;)

Nice work Andy - which Kef's did you end up getting in the end?

I should be having mine delivered today, although they still haven't arrived  I'll be hooking up mine to a Yamaha 750 too, it'll be interesting to hear how you get on.

    Let us know your impressions.

I got the same package as you i think.
    Front Q4's
    Center Q6C
Surround QCompacts (not decided on stands yet though)
    And PSW2500 Subwoofer.

Only had a couple of problems during the setup. The banana connectors should push into the Speaker posts. I managed to dislodge a small piece of plastic which prevented one speaker doining this.
Also During the Automated setup, the Test results indicated that the Front had the polarity reversed ( can't remember the error code) But they weren't.
I was very particular when Making up the cables and plugging it all in.
I think i read that mic placement can cause this error message to pop up on the tests.

Andy, great to see that you ordered the Kefs, they won't disappoint.

As always, am interested in how ppl have their subs set up, I can never seem to satisfy myself with the sub and have tried various models. I opted to stay with the PSW2500 cos of its subtlety. I think it has a great sound.....BUT having said that, am always wanting to sound better.

I have set the crossover on my amp to 80hz, and I think the sub is set at around 100hz with the phase switched off.

Let me know how you get on with it.

EDIT!!! I forgot to mention that those plastic bits on the binding posts are supposed to be removed to allow access for 4mm bananas. Also, I get the out of phas message when trying to auto-calibrate my Deonon 3805. I know loads of other owners who experience this problem. I have never once been able to successfully set up my amp AUTOMATICALLY

Done a bit of shopping around and found the Q4's for £330. Not as cheap as Hispek but at £330 I can get them delivered :)

Very soon I'm going to have the Q4's, Q6C and Q1's all for £600. No money left for a sub :(

The maple ones do look nice as well. I had silver speakers previously and they seemd to sit with the TV better.

Here are some quick snaps as i was setting up. I may have to rearrange the room, and i definately want to bracket the Q6C to the rear wall. It seems overbearing in its present location.

Thanks very much for posting the pics :) They look very good!

Now choosing between the maple and silver is going to be even more tricky!
