Should I be able to hear a 5:1 digital surround when watching sky's broadcasts, or is it only possible with a digital connection such as for dvd player? Everything except my DVD's seem only to be dolby surround.

You need Sky+ to listen to Sky's broadcasts in 5.1.

Even then isn't it only 1 or 2 of the movie channels?

Yes and some of the SBO movies use it.
However there is no technical reason why every program with a DD soundtrack can not be broadcast on SKY D with it intact and since they've gone to the trouble of equipping SKY+ with a compatible optical output I do honestly expect DD to become more widespread.

It all sounds good, sorry about the pun. Perhaps I ought to ditch NTL for TV, just keep the phone and broadband.

You don't have to pay the SKY+ subscription to access DD through a SKY+ box, you do have to buy the SKY+ box though:)

There have been and still are rumours/reports of a add-on for standard digiboxes to allow DD to be output.
True or not who apart from SKY and it's license holders know.

Just bought a Sony S760 U off e-bay for £125. This box has optical out and it's lovely looking. Nice and slim and very fast with the programme guides compared to my old Grundig box.

Maybe worth a look on auction sites.........:D

I have that sony box. but it wont give you 5.1, even with the optical out. Only the sky+ can do that
