Nagging feeling I've messed up really badly....

My wife has just bought me a panasonic scht870 dvd surround system for christmas- the idea is to use it to get surround sound from the xbox. However I've just unpacked it and it has no digital inputs.... If I understand this right, that means I'm not going to be able to get 5.1 from the xbox - am I right? :suicide:

    Cheers,

    Stu

You need to buy an advanced scart lead - I use the official MS one. It has an optical out on that. Disaster averted!

Yes that is correct if the DVD/AMP doesn't have a digital in then you can not (as far as I know) connect the Xbox up to it for digital sound. The only method I know is through connecting a Fibre optic lead from an advanced scart (with the optical out part on the plug) to an optical in on an amp. I don't think there's a way to connect a digital coax between the two devices.

Personally I went down the Sony Dav path and got an S550 (model no longer available) and that had an optical in on it - you could try swapping for one of the DAV range that has the required input.

Oh, sorry, I misread your post first time :suicide: What I should've said is - Can't you get an optical => coax connector? I'm sure I've seen them in Maplins or similar... What inputs does the amp have?

From what I've seen I'm not so sure it's got any form of digital audio input...

I've just bought myself an Xbox AV lead, with optical connection to go into my Sony STR-DE495P AV Amp. Getting great 5.1 sound and scared the whatsit out of myself playing Halo this afternoon. However, the only video outputs on this lead are SVHS and Scart - neither the Sony or my TV has a SVHS input and the available Scart socket on the TV is being used for the output from the Sony, so I have to swap the Scart from the Sony for the Scart from the Xbox if I want to play games. Either I need a two-way switchable Scart box, or a lead which connects SVHS to phono plugs to connect to the Sony - is there such a thing?

You need a receiver that has at least one Digital input. (optical) to conect your XBox. Otherwise, its analog baby!

Say "sorry" and "I love you" to your wife before returing it and buying an amp and 5 speakers!

I have just had a look on the Panasonic website, there is no reference of a digital input, just analogue.:suicide:
