I'm just after some straight advice really. I've been looking at the Sony STR-DG510 as it will accept HDMI. Only problem is, it only passes 1080i while my TV supports 1080p. I'm not even sure that I need the 5.1 through HDMI?

All I really want is proper surround so I can hear bullets flying past my head and be able to get proper cinema sound while watching in blu-ray.

Would I be better of going for something cheap and cheerful like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=270200530559 , which i can connect via an optical lead then just run 1080p through the PS3 straight to my TV?

Sorry for the long post but don't really want to waste money on something I don't really need! Alternatively does anyone know of something more ideal for around the 100-150 max mark?

Cheers

If you want the best quality sound from you ps3..uncompressed pcm5.1 then go for the Sony str-dg510..have a read of the manual http://www.circuitcity.com/image/product_documentation/manuals/son/SON.STRDG510.MAN.pdf

Jon2, Yeah that's the one I was thinking of. Do you think I should link it via a Toslink then run the PS3 to TV? Or would it be hardly noticeable to run HDMI from the PS3 to reciever then TV and lose the resolution to 1080i?

I've also been recommended this a cheaper alternative http://www.richersounds.co.uk/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=YAMA-RXV361 .

I basically can't afford much as I'm a student at the mo but I want to get the best I can out of the PS3 for around £100

getting more expensive but would be better in the long run, gives you all the hd formats for the future although ps3 will only output lpcm at the moment, do a thorough search there is so much info on these things in these forums!
:) good luck

That looks ideal however it's way out of my price range for the moment. I'm not really after the best quality at the moment. I just want 5.1 rather than stereo for now. My current speakers wouldn't do a reciever like that justice tbh.

Oh well. Thanks for all your help but I've gone for the 510. After searching pretty much all weekend it's the biggest spec for my budget (well slightly over budget).

I'm sure it'll do me well for now. Now I just need to find a way of connecting my subs bare wires to an RCA....

Thanks again
