4K "Upscaling" TV?

I recently bought a Sharp 70" 4K upscaling TV, and have a question...

If I understand what upscaling means, it takes the standard 1080 HD source, then "upscales" it to fit the screen, correct, or no?

The reason I ask, right now I run a PS3 as my Blu-Ray player, and a DirecTV HD DVR TiVo (both are 1080 of course). DirecTV now offers a 4K DVR, and of course, 4K DVD players are also available.

Would I get any benefit by upgrading to true 4K sourcing?

Thanks!

A true 4k signal will alwys be much better, the same goes for any true source over something upscaled.
