Hi everyone,
I have a newbie 4K question. Is 4K today the same as 4K from years ago....

My home theater setup is I have a 4K apple tv which i connect to a receiver via HDMI. The HDMI output of the receiver then connects to my TV

My current receiver is a Sony STRDN1080, purchased 7 years ago. It says it supports 4K pass through. I just purchased a high end 4K QLED tv from Samsung.

Question: If I wanted the best video quality from Apple TV would I need to update my receiver or does the fact that it supports 4K mean that it will support the highest video quality from the new Apple TV?

Thanks for any help!

You'd presumably need to know which resolutions/formats the 4K Apple TV supports/outputs and which the AVR will allow to pass through.

The relevant extract below from p.62 of the AVR manual suggests it'll support 4K@60, 50, 30, 25 & 24Hz (fps) so that should have you covered for anything except gaming in 4K@120Hz. It looks like the Apple TV is 60fps max.

The AVR also supports HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG HDR, but there's no mention of HDR10+, which the Apple TV supports. I'm not sure how much HDR10+ content you'd come across anyway, though.

Audio-wise - historically, you'd have normally been better off connecting the Apple TV directly to the AVR however these days, if your new TV and AVR both support e-ARC, then this may not be crucial.

I’ve got the same avr it supports all HDR formats apart from HDR10 + it's the tv I'd be bothered about Samsung tvs don't support dolby vision. If you want HDR10 + you'll have to connect the device directly to the tv
