does anyone know when the component is meant to arrive and if so at what price?

If it is due soon, will there be good prices on the 1GB IBM Microdrives?

I have two things in mind:

Silent PC (a la your experiment with the Hard card a while ago)

and for music on my PDA on the train! saves buying an Apple!

oh and I think they are cool :)

I've only come across a couple of these, but I was surprised how noisy they are. I'm trying to remember if it was just on seeks or if idle spinning was noisy, but it did put me off the idea. I'm working on a new silent multifunction PC at the moment, the platform is top-secret ;) but for the hard drive I'm using is a 40GB Hitachi 80GN which is one of the quietest laptop drives and enclosing it to further reduce noise. I haven't been able to test it, but I'm fairly sure it will be silent enough, despite it being the only thing that makes any noise in the case apart from the mainly redundant DVD drive (Pioneer DVD writer) i.e fanless.

    Hello Jeff,

I use that same laptop drive in a 2.5" USB 2 enclosure for backing up stuff from laptop and server, it is just about silent once it has spun up. You need to put the case to you ear to know it is spinning.

    Mark.
