48” OLED : LG CX or Sony A9 or ... ?

My 43“ Panasonic plasma screen is still going strong after over 15 years, but my receiver of a similar vintage is becoming unreliable (takes several goes to fire it up).

So the time has come to bite the bullet. I could get a replacement receiver, but it is overkill as I mainly use the system for terrestrial tv now, but I dare say that I would start to use my Amazon Prime sub if I had the capability.

Probably a more sensible alternative would be to get a tv with sound or, if necessary, a sound bar. The screen can be no wider than 1.1m which I think limits me to a 48 inch screen. I haven’t had any problems with screen burn, so I assume that an OLED screen is the way to go. The only sufficiently small OLEDs seem to be the LG CX and the Sony A9. Are there any others? Which would be preferable? Eg, does one upscale significantly better than the other? Is the builtin sound adequate? What other factors should I be considering? It‘d be great if the telly lasted as long as the Penny has...

Its only this year that OLEDs have been sold smaller than 55". If you want to use built in audio the Sony will be better, it has there acoustic surface audio tech rather than built in speakers. Its sound is better than built in audio, but perhaps not as good as soundbar like the Sonos ARC.

LG have caught up with upscaling a fair bit, so I think both TVs will be evenly matched. You may find the Sony better for motion though.

I'd advise waiting to buy if you can, since both TVs are very expensive right now. You can actually buy one of last years 55" OLEDs in the Philips OLED754 for less.

If you watch a lot of terrestrial, does that mean you're not likely to splash-out on expensive HDR/4K subscriptions? If this is the case then I'd say don't blow £££'s on a tv which is over-specc'd for your needs! I nearly fell into the same trap myself a year ago: funnily enough my 10+ year-old 47" Pana plasma still looks quite superb, so I got a good YouView set-top box with apps, and am planning to improve the audio. Will end up having spent £200-300 rather than somewhere approaching £2k....

Thanks. Yes, indeed. The choice for me is between replacing the (analogue, pre-hd) screen, or replacing the receiver (and using tv sound). My receiver is overkill (yamaha z9) and the latest 3080 seems to be about to be replaced, so I thought I’d look at the tv option.

Alternatively, one could build-up the dvd/blu-ray collection quite significantly for a few hundred quid :)
