I had pretty much decided to buy the Hitachi 400e version today when I came across the new 500E which is fanless.

Has anybody seen this in action and if so what did you think. According to http://www.shootandshow.co.uk/ it was available from the 12th December and with not a bad price to boot as well at £2696.

    Any insight is appreciated.

    Cheers

    I haven't but I do have a 400E.

Fanless is better than 1 fan, however the fan is so quiet it really is not that much of an issue.

The 500e has a better brightness fiure 1100 instead of 1000 and has better inputs. Most other things stay the same, 16bit, same 1000:1 contrast etc. For £200 it is worth getting th 500e however it really does not bother me at all having just got my 400e for £2495 as it simply blows me away when I watch it!! :)

    Cheers Harvey,

I was pretty much decided on the 400E (even with the potential fan issue) when the 500E caught my attention.
I think I will go with the 500E and post the feedback on here in the next couple of weeks

I recently saw the Hitachi 42PD5000, which I guess is the same as PMA500E but with tuner included. I compared it to the new Fujitsu P42HHS and I must say the Hitachi showed a very comparable picture, in fact it even provided better blacks than the Fuji and is around 1500€ cheaper.
The only thing thats bothering me is that the Hitachi still uses 8bit processing resulting in only 256 gray levels whereas the Fuji and others offer 10 bit processing resulting in 1024 gray levels, though I didn`t see any visibile disadvantages compared to the Fuji.

    Cheers MH

    Yo

Went down to Nexnix to compare Hitachi to Pana PW6.

Cosmetically I preferred the PW6, black looks better than silver.

Picture, its a hard choice, this was watching Sky with Back to Future on BBC1.
PW6 was smoother, 500E was a bit blocky

DVD - 500E had much more detail and PW6 still looked great but not as sharp as 500E.

So theres the dilema for ordinary TV the PW6 was better, but for DVD 500E wins.
I'm leaning towards the 500E as I thinkits future proofed a bit better, but no desktop stands available at moment.

Of course the Pio 434 blows them both away, but its a load more money !

The 500E has the following connections as standard 2 x YUV Component, RGB Scart, Composite Video, SVideo, PC - VGA, PC - DVI which was confirmed to me by Kevin at Nexnix.

Thanks for the comparison with the PW6, I was in two minds at to whether to go for the PW6 or 500E, but considering the inputs that come as standard with the 500E and it is cheaper than the PW6 then I think it wins out.
I am at the moment trying to broker a good deal with Nexnix for the screen and a VSX-AX10iS amp so will let you know how I get on.

considering those connections it is a very good deal indeed.
I've set up the 400e for a friend and have to say I was very impressed apart from the connections.

I think you'll find the 500E has just computer connections as standard, but can be ordered with the optional video board which gives it everything you could want in the way of Home entertainment connections, as standard the connections are sparser than the 400E.

    Best regards David

I can confirm that the video board with all the groovy sockets is included in just about everybody's price. In fact I think you would have to ask specially for it to be not included.

    Hi All,
Your are probably right in your assumption that almost everybody is selling the Screen with the board, what I was trying to point out to Gingerone is the fact that as standard from Hitachi it comes without the video board, the video board can be ordered at the time fitted or fitted later if so desired. I just didnt want Gingerone ordering the Screen then being caught out by it not having the video inputs fitted.
The point I was making is check and then double check when you order this Screen that the KT upgrade board fitted.

    Best regards David

Just as a note to everyone considering buying one, the vidoe board comes as a seprate item in the main main box and you need to fit it yourself. It is pretty easy just 4 screws and you are away.

Let me know if you thinks it is an improvement over the PD3000/400E in terms of PQ etc.

    Cheers
