    Dear All,

It arrived today my new Hitachi 42pd3000. What can I say, wow. I already had friends round who refused to leave when they saw how clear the pictures were from DVD.

I seem to be getting less clear pictures (grain?) from my NTL box via scart is this normal? Perversly the 1 digital channel I don't want to watch (CBeebies) looks excellent.

What settings would people recommend for ALS etc.

I must also commend Futurehome in Wokingham for their excellent service. They provided regular updates on delivery dates. Came round and installed the unit, set it all up all for the price of £3895. Throughout their staff were friendly helpful and didn't get sick of me asking questions.

Anyway here is the piccy. The stand was £55 from Ikea.

    Best Regards

    Josh

I'm afraid I don't have a normal aerial, it's a new house and we are not allowed them on the development. All my signals come through NTL.

What I can tell you is that this set and its smaller sister have won nearly all the reccent awards in the magazines beating the Pannys pants down.

However where the Hitachi was criticised it was because of poorer picture with analogue signals. Check any of the recent mags if you want more info.

    Best Regards

    Josh

PS still looking for advice on the best settings to use etc,

so a Freeview box would be better. I guess if I went for it another 99 quid would be small fry in the whole scheme of things.

    Hey Josh Bear, Congratulations.
It looks amazing, do I take it that all your doubts are now gone?
Ntl will never look quite as good as dvd but should still be pretty mind blowing, what sort of quality scarts are you using and is the Ntl box configured to output rgb instead of composite and set to 16/9?

    Hi,

I have NTL Digital with my 32PD3000 using a QED RGB SCART and the quality varies a lot with the source material. When its good its really excellent, but when its poor it can be pretty ropey - I guess a plasma is inherently less forgiving...

I have also tried the RF feed and composite video and they are surprisingly good, considering. The picture is much softer, but its certainly watchable.

    Cheers, Peter

Thanks for the tips. I will check my NTL box settings. I might buy a better Scart lead as well. How much should I be paying for a decent one?

prusling do you have any advice on the picture settings you use? Specically the options in the advanced menu. ALS etc

    Thanks

    Josh

    Hi Josh,

    Nice set up!
You should be able to get a fully-wired good quality Scart (e.g. IXOS,QED) for about £30 depending on length.

Hey! Congrats with your new screen!

I've got a question. You say it beats the Panny hands down, according to some magazines? I've read a few reviews about the Hitachi and they were all raving about it. However, I've never seen a review about the Panny PW5 series, only the PW4. Do you have a review which compares both??
And a second question, something that still isn't clear to me. Does it accept Pal progressive? The Hitachi website says it does (I believe), some magazines say it does, but some people on this website say it doesn't, because it's an ALIS display.
Can you please tell me if it does or not???
    Thanks!!!

I'll check on the progressive bit. My assumption that it beats all competition comes from statements in the reviews like "Ladies and gentlemen I give you the best plasma ever" and since all the major magazines (and believe me I spent a fortune reviewing them all before I bought) have come to the same conclusion about the screen, Panasonic may have to accept they have lost their crown:laugh:

But, then again what do I know, it's just a personal opinion.

    Regards

    Josh

It accepts PAL progressive but due to it being an ALIS panel you're best feeding it an interlaced signal anyway, don't ask me to explain why though!

    Cheers,
    Andy.

First plasma and I can't get over the picture quality and size, I'm watching Man U vs Fulham at the moment and I could almost be there, in fact I wish I was, cause I could finish a move better than Ryan "Has anyone seen my guide dog" Giggs

    Regards

    White Balance 50%
    Contrast 33%
Brightness 50% to compensate for black stretch

    Sharpness 0%
    Contrast Mode Normal
    CTI, LTI Both Mid
    YNR, CNR Both Low

Film Mode Off (I expect this is only useful for NTSC?)

    Please post your preferred settings.
