    Hi all,
I've had a Toshiba 42WT29 just over a year. Actually, I just got it back after one of the component inputs died and was away for 2 months getting repaired (Toshiba was out of stock of the part).
Now and then I see a really bad flickering at the bottom of the screen that wasn't there before. It's the red gun that seems to be flickering on dark pictures. Really noticeable with 2.35:1 pics when it's dark. The bottom black bar is almost purple whilst the top is black. Sometimes when I switch off the TV, then back on it seems to go.
Really upset as it's been away for so long and it's worse than it was. It's out of guarentee now.
Anyone know what I should do? The retailers were a complete waste of space while it was being repaired. I was told 7 times they'd phone me back when called and didn't. I guess I can spend £100's getting someone else to repair or try something myself.

    TIA,
    Andy

If its not a convergance problem,it may be the geometry is slightly out.It can be corrected via the service menu.

I've found the 'secret' to accessing the service menu but would like to know what all the numbers represent and a step by step procedure before I change anything.

If it's just been repaired and the fault only appeared after that, then you may well have a chance of getting the repairer to rectify it.
Certainly worth trying that angle before delving into the service menu.

If you do have to resort to that,do a search here on Toshiba RPTV service menu convergence etc,and you should get plenty of useful info.

Be sure also to write down all of the numbers on each service menu item before changing any of them.

had the same issues with my 46WH08B, component input had a tendency to drop a gun, came back when I gave the front of the telly a gentle tap, eventually went alltogether after a few months. After numerous call outs and part relacements the fault was found to be a dry solder joint where the component signal electronic board was attachend to the "motherboard", not the riser connected to the rear of the cabinet as I thought.

been running flawlessly for over 18 months since the service guy reflowed the solder points

Hi Andy. I had a 48" Rear Pro and your prob sounds similiar to mine and Radioactive mans. After 5 minutes of being switched on the bottom 'flickered' into the black area of a widescreen broadcast....(the black area).Mine was out of guarantee too.....i contacted Sound + Vision (Bolton Lancs) were it originally was bought. They put me in touch with an approved Toshiba Rear Pro repairer......This guy came round....and refluxed a 'chip' on the main board.......call out charge was £75.00.That was 12 months ago.......and the TV has been absolutely perfect (I have since sold it to a mate at work and he is totally delighted with it).Apparently....in time.....this chip....and its solder...dries out.....and arcing across the board can occur...that was my problem....yours seems similiar.Find a Toshiba Approved Engineer...dealing in specifically Rear Projections ONLY....... in your area. There are Toshiba engineers........but you want one that is experienced in Rear Toshiba projections...not just normal Toshiba TVs.
    Regards Baz

Thanks alot for the help. I was on such a high when it came back. It was away for 8 weeks which was murder for someone mad into his home cinema. The picture actually seemed loads better at first, even the viewing angle seemed better. It was later that night watching a film when I saw the dodgy purple bar/flicker. I stayed up till 3 in the morning searching the net for a possible solution.
It's still happening. The bottom half of the screen flickers at what seems 20Hz. I switch the TV off and on and it comes back OK for a while.
I will search out a RPTV specialist. I'd rather pay £75 than go without it again for 2 months.

I still think a good RPTV that's set up correctly is still the best price/size until good Plasmas or LCDs get to £1000.

    cheers,
    Andy
