Excuse my ignorance here, but if I put a 60w or stronger bulb in a light I have that says 40w max, what will happen? The actual light is blown glass so apart from it geting hotter to the touch what else would happen? Is the actual light wired to only accept low watt bulbs, I have no idea?

You will scorch or melt the fitting/shade. A regular lightbulb uses about 98% of the energy it consumes to make heat, not light. A 60w bulb will make 50% more heat than a 40w bulb. Don't do it. If you want greater brightness, and aren't using a dimmer, use a low-energy (mini-fluorescent) bulb, of any rating you want. These are more efficient, and only just get warm.
