3g Reception great but not connecting

The last few days my 3GS has had an issue with connecting to the interenet whilst on 3G. I'm on O2 and the phone is telling me I have great 3G reception but when I do anything involving going online - apps tore, Twitter, facebook, safari - I just get the twirling wheel next to the 3G symbol.

Works fine on wifi.

Am hoping it's a network and not a phone issue. Has anyone ahd this issue?

Had similar issues whilst at the Sunderland game on Saturday. Couldnt get the Sky Sports app to work to check other scores or get on the BBC Sport site. I put it down to loads of folk in a small area swamping the signal. I'm also on O2 by the way and my other half who is also on O2 had the same issue on her Nokia phone.
