Whenever I choose DD EX on my R1 copy of T2 the back channel LED on my 3801 fails to light but if I select DTS ES it comes on.

Does anyone else with a Denon 3801 and T2 see this?? or is there no DD EX on this disc even though the DVD memu and case say there is??

I get the same problem on my Pioneer VSX909 which has EX processing..

Although the light not come on the speakers most certainly work !!

I think they forgot to set the bit marker correctly..

The answer to the problem is quite simple. The 3801 does not have DD EX processing, that's why the light is not lighting. As far as I am aware there is only one product in the world that has DD EX and DTS ES processing, the Denon AVCA1SE.

Soory your are wrong there the following models all have EX/ES processing:

    Pioneer VSX859
    Pioneer VSX909
    Pioneer VSX-E08

    Starting price £550...

I have had 859 (for 15 days befor Pioneer recall) and it does EX/ESW says so in the manual, this was replaced by Pioneer for a 909 and this most certainly does it bu the EX speaker light does not come on during T2 play back

But does on Gladiator and Toy Story 2 !

It's a bit confusing so I shall probably get it wrong as well.

Firstly Only the new Denon amps/receivers support DTS ES discrete. The pioneers support DTS ES matrix.

Secondly (and here I maybe wrong) in order to officially support DD EX the amp/receiver would have to be THX ultra certified.

The 3801 does do DD EX it just hasn't got the THX certification. Anything you read in the magazines generally say this and also to quote from the 3801 product sheet,

"In addition to Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding, the AVR-3801 also features a 6.1 Matrix
mode, which provides 6.1 channel decoding from 6.1 channel encoded Dolby
    Digital sources."

This has been confirmed by my dealer also DD EX is matrix only not discreet.

I did email Denon but got no reply!

Yes but if its not THX its not EX. EX is a THX thing.

The Pioneer 909 is an Ultra speced machine and does have DD ex, as did the 859 I had. But that was THX Select..

I agree with Tony, the Denon 3801 with decode EX and it will sound the same as the AVC A10 (which is THX) but the only diffence is that is can't be advertised as EX due to the fact that it is not THX certified.
And finally alot of American reviewers state that the circuitry is the same or similar to the AVC A10 but Denon didn't want to pay Lucas for the THX badge , so it could keep the price down.

None of the released DD EX titles carry the auto detect flag. DTS are slightly ahead in this area since all the DTS-ES titles released so far have the appropriate flag to turn on your back surround back speaker(s).

Dolby Labs have very recently stated that they have just completed an update of the Dolby Digital software WHICH now includes the surround back information flag. Expect EX flagged titles to appear june/july.

FYI I am using an AVC-A10SE/POA-T10 with KEF Q series speakers.

The Pioneer 909, has an mode called 'THX Auto' with will selct EX if a signal is present or normal 5 speakers if not..

So why if the spec is still being defined/finalised does it manage to auto turn on the speakers to the rear on Gladiator, Toy Story2, FGight Club, T2 Ultimate edition...???

    It works for me..
